Cricut just released a brand new product and I’m super excited about it! They just released a line of Cricut Watercolor Markers and Watercolor Cards and they are just as fun as can be!
These watercolor markers go in the pen slot of your Cricut Maker, Cricut Joy or Cricut Explore Air and can be used on heavy watercolor paper cardstock as well as with Cricut Watercolor Cards.
At this point the watercolor inks are available in a pack with 8 colors– purple, blue, black, brown, yellow, orange, red and green. Knowing Cricut and their love of color I’m sure there will be more color packs available in the future to expand your pen collection.
I was lucky enough to get to try this product out before it was available to the public and I’ve been having so much fun with it!
Do you remember the paint with water books that were so popular in the 80’s? This new line reminds me of those!
Cricut Watercolor Markers Basics
The basics of the Cricut Watercolor Markers are fairly simple– Insert a watercolor pen into the pen holder on your Cricut cutting machine and have your Cricut draw or sketch a design on watercolor paper for you.
Once the design is drawn, remove the card from your cutting machine and the mat. Use the included watercolor brush, and wet the lines to make watercolor paint. From there your creativity and talent are the limit.
I have zero watercolor experience, but I LOVE trying new products and the experimenting with new mediums so I had so much fun with this.
As my watercolor skills improve, I love the idea of playing around more creating watercolor, handlettered looks on cards. It’s a skill that I’ve always admired so much, but don’t have in my skillset, so it would be wonderful if my Cricut could help me achieve the look!
Cricut Watercolor Markers Ideas
When I was trying out these pens and cards it was before Cricut had any watercolor marker cut files in Design Space so I was experimenting making my own.
Now that Cricut has officially launched the watercolor markers, project ideas are available in Cricut Design Space. Many are included with a Cricut Access subscription. Here are a few of my favorites!
Cricut Watercolor Pens and Watercolor Card Instructions
Ready to make your first watercolor card? I’m going to share with you my simple step-by-step process.
I used the Cricut Joy Watercolor Pens and Cricut Joy Card Mat for my project but there are also watercolor pens and card mats for the Cricut Explore and Cricut Maker families of machines. Find all of the Cricut Watercolor Pens here and the Cricut Card Mats here.
Here’s how you get started using the watercolor pens!

Step 1: Open Cricut Design Space, select your design and insert it onto your canvas. I decided to use my own design which is available in Cricut Design Space for this project. It is design number #M3F255F6F.
Step 2: Change the line type of each piece to draw, and select what color of pen you would like for it to draw in. Size your design so that it fits on the front of your watercolor card.
Step 3: Put a watercolor card onto your Cricut Card Mat.
Step 4: Click Make It, select Card Mat as your cutting mat, connect Design Space to your Cricut cutting machine and follow the instructions on the screen to load your cutting mat into your machine and load each pen in order into your cutting machine.
Step 5: Remove your cutting mat from your Cricut. Carefully peel your card from your cutting mat. Use the water brush pen that comes with your Cricut Watercolor Pens to watercolor your card and color in the painted shapes. Make sure you don’t oversaturate your paper to avoid wrinkles
There are tons of different ways to do this and I find that experimentation is the best way to learn. For my card I gently traced along the inside of each letter, dragging the watercolor paint into the letters to gently fill them in. You can also play with color mixing , blending outside the lines, playing with light and shadow, and so many other things!
Step 6: Let your card dry, then write a message inside and give it to someone to brighten their day!
